Sergio Monterisi has played more than 150 concerts as a piano soloist, in various chamber ensembles, and as accompanist in vocal recitals. The French-German TV Channel “Arte” and the German National Radio recorded a few of his performances in 1993, and then again in 2000.
After his musical studies in his hometown, from 1995 to 2002 he was assistant conductor and choral conductor in many opera houses of Southern Italy. His experience as a vocal coach includes work in many Italian opera houses, voice academies, and master classes with such leading Italian singers and conductors as Gianni Raimondi, Paolo Montarsolo, Robleto Merolla, Katia Ricciarelli and Piero Bellugi. He has taught in several Italian conservatories and a course on voice and opera at the Conservatory of Bari, Italy.

In 2002, he was assistant conductor to Maestro Marco Guidarini for a performance of Leoncavallo's opera La Bohème at the KlangBogen Festival in Vienna. He made his debut as operatic conductor in 2000 for an acclaimed performance of Verdi's Falstaff (Beppe De Tomasi, director), at the Teatro Mancinelli in Orvieto, Italy. Monterisi has studied and conducted several operas from the pre-romantic repertoire including such famous composers of the Neapolitan School as Cimarosa, Fioravanti, Traetta, Paisiello, Capotorti and Piccinni. His performance of La Cecchina Maritata (Bari, 2002) was the first modern performance of this comic opera. In four years, Monterisi brought the oldest musical society of his hometown, the “Associazione Polifonica Barese”, back to its ancient glory, conducting the choir and orchestra in over 80 concerts throughout Italy.

In September 2002, he joined the New England Conservatory faculty as principal conductor of NEC Sinfonietta and assistant conductor of orchestral activities (directed by Dante Anzolini), conducting several highly acclaimed concerts, and leading all of the NEC orchestras. In 2003 he was appointed Resident Conductor and Director of the NEC Sinfonietta, cooperating with such famous American musicians as Joey Silverstein, Kim Kashkasian, Lawrence Lesser, Ken Radnofsky.

In December 2003 he conducted the world première of Michael Gandolfi’s Resonance Frames, commissioned by Professor Kelly at Sanders Theatre, Harvard University.
In 2004 he founded the Bitonto Opera Festival, where he conducted acclaimed productions of G. Verdi’s Rigoletto and La Traviata, G. Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, G. Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore, Puccini’s La Bohème, Mozart’s Don Giovanni and the first world performance of his own children opera Il Gigante Egoista, after the short tale of Oscar Wilde “The Selfish Giant”.

Since September 2005, invited by M° Marco Guidarini, he is Assistant Conductor at the Opèra de Nice (France). Here he has conducted about 130 concerts leading the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice and the Ensemble Apostrophe. He conducts for many important French festivals, such as «Géneration virtuoses» - Cap d’Antibes (Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Orff’s Carmina Burana), Festival de musique sacrée de Nice, «Violons de légende»- St.Jean Cap-Ferrat, Les nuits musicales du Suquet de Cannes, Les floraisons musicales, Académie d’été de Nice, featuring such soloists as Roger Muraro, Marc Coppey, Mikhail Rudy, Nemaniah Radulovic, Xavier Philips. In Nice lyric seasons he conducted new productions of Don Pasquale, Le Nozze di Figaro, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Nino Rota's The smart squirrel, Haendel’s oratorio Jephta, ballets Soirée Piazzolla (Bandoneon concerto) and Soirée Falla (El sombrero de tres picos and El amor brujo), as well as several lyric Galas (featuring M.Dragoni, V.Galouzine, N.Manfrino, T.Caruso, R.Servile, D.Mazzola etc.), among which a Tribute to Gavazzeni in the centennial of the great conductor’s birth.

Sergio Monterisi is often in demand abroad for his knowledge of the Italian bel canto repertoire.He guest conducted many international orchestras (Academic Symphony of S.Pietroburgo, Orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, Orquesta dl Vallès, Karkhov Symphony Orchestra, Sofia National Radio Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica della Provincia di Bari, Orchestra del Teatro Vittorio Emanuele di Messina, Orquesta Geraçao, Orchestra Rossini di Pesaro) in symphonic seasons and festivals. He is regularly invited by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, Orchestre de l'Opéra de Toulon Provence Méditerranée and Orchestre Régional de Cannes, as well as the Festival "Musiques aux Etoiles" in Carpentras, where he was appointed Music Director in 2012-13.

In July 2011 he conducted the first performance in South America of Il viaggio a Reims at the Teatro Argentino de La Plata, radio-broadcasted by Radio Nacionàl Argentina. In September 2012 he led the first performance in Brasil of Paisiello's Il Barbiere di Siviglia, at Theatro Sao Pedro in Sao Paulo.
In December 2012 he was appointed Professor of Orchestral Conducting at Conservatorio "L.Perosi" in Campobasso, Italy. and directs its Youth Orchestra in numerous festivals and concerts; since 2021 he has been full-time professor of Orchestral Conducting at the "G.P. da Palestrina" Conservatory of Cagliari.
